Shingama, founded in Seto, Aichi prefecture in 1919, is a pottery.
They have dyed green bodies of potteries, painted patterns on them, and created various sometsuke items by taking advantage of the clay made in Seto area.

"Sometsuke"

Sometsuke is a method to paint patterns on the surface of a white porcelain with a pigment consisted of cobalt oxide called “gosu” and color patterns blue by firing it after glazing.

Also, items made by using the dyeing technique called “dami” (dripping "gosu” from a big and thick brush to paint patterns on the surface of the porcelain) are very popular.

Seto Underglazed Ware was designated as a traditional craft of Japan in 1997.
Shingama carries out all the processes from forming green bodies to painting and firing.

They also keep creating exclusive potteries by using traditional techniques and assimilating new ones.
